Music Tryptich

This project is a cooperation between two graphic design students, Marlen Weise and Pauline Baumberger and a composition student, Sara Zamboni.

Together we created a tryptich of three videos on the topic „The happiness, the sadness and the neutral side of The Hague“ under guidance of Gert Dumbar. Each video has three layers. Each arose during the creation process. The first step was the recording of image material on The Hague. We made a selection of twelve clips. In each of the three videos the same material is used and only by different arrangement and cuts the mood of the videos changes. As a second step the visuals have been given to Sara Zamboni who created the soundscape for the videos and by that interpreting it subcetively. Following, Marlen Weise and Pauline Baumberger interpreted the sounds as shapes.

The combination of three different layers: moving image, music and shapes shows a fusion of three different spectators‘ views.

"I do believe that music and visual arts are two possible filters to face the reality and it is almost impossible to depict and sensorial experience without a mood that could suggest something very far away from the object or even an opposite sensation.

I built a soundscape directly on the elements of the video clips and I had the idea to treat sound material in different ways. Sometimes the sound could be related to images in a mimetic process (as an act of resembling) or sometimes it could suggest different materials and their interaction in a sort of collateral effects. It is also possible that sometimes nothing happens because I tried also to force the system of perception using mechanical elements (loops) to re-set our feelings and play with them.

The result of this process has many and subjective possibilities, as a result of separation and then reunification of different layers."
